Oral Medications
Oral Drugs used at Ixtapa / Delray that Inhibit Cancer Progression:
Angiogenesis Inhibition
Copper is a mineral which is essential for the development of new blood vessels – a process known as angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is necessary for metastasis of cancer. Tetrathiolmolybdate I, which is a chelator of copper, has shown to inhibit metastasis.
Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibition
Cancer cells secrete an enzyme called matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) which breaks down normal tissue, allowing the cancer to spread. Doxycycline (an antibiotic), in low doses, is an inhibitor of MMP; studies have shown it to inhibit cancer metastasis.
COX-2 Inhibition
COX-2 is an enzyme that regulates production of prostaglandin; excess COX-2 can promote cancer proliferation and metastasis. COX-2 inhibitors, have shown to inhibit cancer progression and metastasis.
Histamine Blockade
Many cancer cells secrete histamine; histamine suppresses the immune response that the body mounts to attack the tumor. Tagamet is a histamine blocker, has shown to improve the immune response to tumors, and extend survival in many cancers.
Proton Pump Inhibitors
Recent in vitro and in vivo studies revealed that pre-treating cancer cells and tumor-laden mice with proton pump inhibitors (such as Prilosec) decreased chemotherapy drug resistance, and made the cancer more susceptible to cell death. At Ixtapa, we add these drugs to our extensive regimen.
